No geral, assume-se que a geopolítica global se baseia em antipatias entre Estados ou outras unidades políticas, como os impérios, baseados na competição expansionista por recursos ou território. Pouco ou nada se fala sobre como muitas vezes o conflito tem origem nas histórias e na política doméstica dos Estados ou impérios envolvidos. Este ensaio questiona o binário interior-exterior e argumenta que aqueles que se dedicam ao estudo dos conflitos entre Estados devem prestar muita atenção à política doméstica dos “bandos”, tomando como exemplo a hostilidade recente entre Israel e Irã. Nesse caso, a história da submissão prolongada do Irã às intervenções estrangeiras e suas especificidades étnicas e religiosas influem nas relações que estabelece com o mundo exterior no geral e com Israel em particular. Por sua parte, a situação interna do atual governo de Israel tem afetado possivelmente sua resposta às supostas tentativas do Irã de processar urânio, o que tem estimulado as hostilidades abertas. O conflito não pode ser compreendido corretamente sem uma análise minuciosa da política interna dos mesmos partidos. Isso aplica da mesma forma para outros conflitos existentes ou latentes como o da Rússia e a Ucrânia e o dos Estados Unidos e a China, respectivamente.
